Nadi is the heaviest koota in the 36-guna match: 8 points, all or nothing. Because there are only three nadis, one couple in three lands on "same nadi" and loses all 8 before anything else is read. What the fear-selling sites leave out is the next paragraph of the very same tradition: the cancellation rules. We ran every one of the 11,664 nakshatra-pada combinations through them. 42.4% of nadi dosha verdicts cancel (1,650 of 3,888 cases). Four in ten "no" answers are wrong on the classical texts' own terms.
What nadi dosha is
Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis: Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha). The tradition reads a shared nadi as a shared constitution, and links it to health and progeny. When both moon nakshatras fall in the same nadi the koota scores 0 of 8, and the total drops by nearly a quarter of the whole scale in one stroke. A 26 becomes an 18. A 22 becomes a 14 and gets labelled a failed match.
The six classical cancellation rules
These are not vague. Each one is a condition you can check from the two birth charts. Our free matching tool applies all six automatically and prints which one fired.
- Same nakshatra, different rashi. Nine nakshatras straddle two moon signs (Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Purva Bhadrapada). If both moons are in one of these stars but the padas put them in different signs, the dosha is void.
- Same rashi, different nakshatra. Both moons in the same sign, but different birth stars: the dosha is void.
- Same nakshatra, same rashi, different pada. Same star, same sign, but different quarter (charana): most lineages treat this as void too.
- Both moon-sign lords are the same planet. Aries and Scorpio share Mars, Taurus and Libra share Venus, Gemini and Virgo share Mercury, Sagittarius and Pisces share Jupiter, Capricorn and Aquarius share Saturn. A shared lord cancels nadi dosha (and bhakoot dosha).
- The two moon-sign lords are mutual friends. By the classical permanent friendships: Sun with Moon, Mars and Jupiter; Moon with Sun and Mercury; Mars with Sun, Moon and Jupiter; Mercury with Sun and Venus; Jupiter with Sun, Moon and Mars; Venus with Mercury and Saturn; Saturn with Mercury and Venus. Both directions must be friendly. This is the rule most calculators skip, and it is the one that rescues the most matches.
- Both moons in one of the eight exempt nakshatras. Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Magha, Vishakha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. When both partners share one of these stars, the texts exempt the pair from nadi dosha altogether.
A real example: Mula and Uttara Phalguni
A reader asked us about a Mula bride and an Uttara Phalguni groom. Every website had said no: both stars are Aadi nadi, so 8 points gone, plus a gana mismatch. Here is what the rules actually say. Mula sits in Sagittarius, lord Jupiter. Uttara Phalguni pada 1 sits in Leo, lord Sun; padas 2 to 4 sit in Virgo, lord Mercury.
If his moon is in pada 1, Jupiter and Sun are mutual friends, rule 5 fires, the 8 points return, and the match reads 24.5 of 36, "very good" by the classical count. If his moon is in pada 2, 3 or 4, Jupiter and Mercury are not friends, no rule fires, and the raw score stays around 14. Same two names, ten points apart, decided by one birth-time detail no name-based calculator ever asks for.

Why calculators hide this
A cancelled nadi dosha restores 8 points. On a scale of 36, that routinely moves a match from "failed" to "accepted", and an accepted match sells no remedies. A tool that stops at the raw number keeps you worried, and a worried family buys a puja. We publish the rules and apply them because we do not sell remedies, by written policy.

Check three things before any fear. First, run the six rules above from both charts, which needs birth time and place, not names. Second, look at where the other points went: a 26 with nadi dosha is not a 12. Third, ask whether the person warning you profits from your worry. If questions remain after that, have both full charts read by someone whose first instinct is the seventh house and Venus, not the shop.
